After more than 26 years as a personal trainer, one of the things I’ve learned is that there is no such thing as a “typical” personal training client.
I’ve worked with people of just about every age, shape, size, ability, and fitness level imaginable. I’ve trained highly conditioned athletes, including professional basketball players, as well as people in their 70s and 80s who were deconditioned, had physical limitations, and hadn’t exercised consistently in years. And then there’s my guy Kip—who is almost 7 feet tall! While every person who walks through the door is different, there is one thing I love seeing with every client: PROGRESS. Progress doesn’t have to mean lifting the heaviest weight in the gym, running a marathon, or looking like you did when you were 25. Especially as we get into our 60s, 70s and 80s, progress can mean something entirely different. It might mean getting out of a chair more easily. Walking up a flight of stairs with greater confidence. Improving your balance. Getting stronger. Moving with less stiffness. Maintaining your independence. Losing body fat. Having more energy to enjoy your family. That’s why I believe personal training should start with one simple principle: Meet people where they are. Personal Training Should Be Personal If you’re searching for a personal trainer in Fort Mill, SC or Tega Cay, SC, particularly if you’re in your 60s, 70s or 80s, you may be wondering whether traditional personal training is really designed for you. Maybe you haven’t exercised in years. Maybe you’ve had surgery or an injury in the past. Maybe your knees, hips, shoulders or back don’t move the way they used to. Maybe you’re concerned about your balance, flexibility or mobility. Or maybe you’ve walked into a gym before and felt like everything was designed for someone younger, fitter and already comfortable exercising. That’s exactly why I don’t believe in cookie-cutter workouts. You don’t need to fit the workout. The workout needs to fit you. One-on-one personal training gives me the opportunity to look at the individual standing in front of me and determine what that person actually needs. Personal Training for Seniors in Fort Mill and Tega Cay One of the fastest-growing parts of my personal training practice has been working with older adults in Fort Mill, Tega Cay and the surrounding area. Many of my clients are in their 50s, 60s, 70s and even 80s. Their goals aren’t always about having six-pack abs or setting records in the gym. They want to continue doing the things that make life enjoyable. They want to travel. Play with their grandchildren. Work in the yard. Play golf. Get up and down from the floor. Carry groceries. Walk without constantly worrying about falling. Stay independent for as long as possible. For someone in their 70s or 80s, improving the strength and confidence to perform everyday activities can be an enormous victory. That’s real-world fitness. You Don’t Have to Be “In Shape” Before Hiring a Personal Trainer I hear versions of this all the time: “I need to get in better shape before I start with a trainer.” That’s backwards. You don’t need to get fit before coming to see me. That’s what I’m here to help you do. If you’ve been sitting on the couch for years and don’t know where to begin, we begin there. If you’re already exercising but need more structure, we begin there. If you’re an experienced athlete looking for another level of performance, we begin there. And if you’re almost seven feet tall like Kip, we figure out how to make exercises work for your body too! After 26+ years of personal training, I’ve learned that two people can perform the same exercise and need completely different coaching, positioning, range of motion, resistance and progression. That’s the difference between simply working out and having someone build a program specifically around you. Strength Training After 60, 70 and 80 Strength becomes increasingly important as we get older. But strength training for older adults doesn’t mean walking into the gym and immediately trying to lift heavy weights. A well-designed program may include work on:
Someone in their 60s who already exercises three days per week may need something completely different from someone in their 80s who hasn’t exercised in 15 years. Both can make progress. Their progress simply looks different. Working Around Your Challenges and Limitations Another reason I believe one-on-one training can be so valuable for older adults is the ability to make adjustments. You might have an exercise that simply doesn’t feel right for your body. That’s okay. There are countless ways to train a muscle or movement pattern. My job isn’t to force your body into an exercise because that’s what everyone else is doing. My job is to determine the safest and most effective way to move you toward your goal. That might mean changing your stance, range of motion, resistance, tempo, equipment or even replacing an exercise entirely. I’ve spent more than 26 years working with hundreds of different people, and that experience has reinforced something for me: Everybody is different. Your First Personal Training Consultation If you’re considering personal training in Fort Mill or Tega Cay, we start by figuring out where you are today. Then we can identify the areas that deserve the most attention. There’s no judgment about where you’re starting. The only question is: Where do you want to go from here? Fitness After 60 Is About Adding Life to Your Years I’ve always believed fitness should be about more than what you see in the mirror. Yes, losing body fat and changing your appearance can absolutely be part of the goal. But especially for my clients in their 60s, 70s and 80s, I’m interested in something bigger: Adding years to your life and life to your years. I want you to become stronger for your everyday life. I want you to move better. I want you to feel more confident in what your body can do. And I want you to continue doing as many of the things you love as possible. Your age doesn’t disqualify you from becoming stronger. Your current fitness level doesn’t disqualify you. And your limitations don’t have to define you.
