Stronger at 75: How Sue Proves It’s Never Too Late to Build Strength, Improve Mobility, and Keep Moving Forward
One of the greatest parts of being a personal trainer is getting to work with people who refuse to let age, past injuries, surgeries, or physical limitations define what they can still accomplish.
One of my peeps, Sue, is 75 years young, and she is a perfect example of what can happen when you simply make the decision to keep showing up and keep moving forward.
Sue has been through a lot physically. She has had a knee replacement, a shoulder replacement, and multiple other surgeries and procedures over the years. It would be easy for someone in her position to look at everything their body has been through and decide that exercise is no longer for them.
Sue has chosen a different path.
She continues to work.
She continues to move.
She continues to get stronger.
And most importantly, she is consistent.
The Work Doesn’t Stop When You Leave the Gym
One of the things I appreciate most about Sue is that she doesn’t just put in the work when she’s training with me.
When we aren’t meeting, she follows through with the exercises, movements, and recommendations I give her to work on independently.
That matters.
Personal training isn’t just about what happens during the hour you spend with your trainer. It’s about developing habits and learning how to safely incorporate movement into your everyday life.
Those small things add up.
A little more movement.
A little more strength.
A little better balance.
A little more flexibility and mobility.
A little more confidence.
You don’t have to completely transform your body overnight. You simply have to be willing to take the next step and then keep taking steps.
Your Past Surgeries Don’t Have to Define Your Future
Many of the adults I work with in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s come to me with a history.
Knee replacements.
Hip replacements.
Shoulder replacements.
Back problems.
Arthritis and joint discomfort.
Old injuries.
Balance concerns.
Loss of mobility.
Years of inactivity.
The list can go on and on.
The goal isn’t to pretend those limitations don’t exist. The goal is to understand them and develop an individualized exercise program that takes them into consideration.
Sometimes an exercise needs to be modified.
Sometimes we need to change the range of motion.
Sometimes we need to slow things down.
Sometimes we need to strengthen the muscles surrounding a vulnerable joint.
And sometimes we simply need to start with the basics.
You don’t have to train like you’re 25 when you’re 75. You need to train in a way that helps you become the strongest, healthiest, and most capable version of yourself today.
Doing Nothing Isn’t Always the Safest Option
I understand why people become afraid to exercise after an injury or surgery.
You don’t want to hurt yourself again.
You may worry about your knee, shoulder, hip, or back.
But avoiding movement altogether can come with its own challenges.
As we get older, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important for everyday life. Strength helps us get out of a chair, climb stairs, carry groceries, maintain our balance, get up from the floor, and continue doing the activities we enjoy.
That’s why my philosophy is simple:
Never let your limitations limit you.
That doesn’t mean ignoring pain or pushing through an injury. It means finding what you can safely do and building from there.
Sue is a wonderful example of that mindset.
Despite everything her body has been through, she continues to find a way to work toward becoming stronger and better instead of allowing her past surgeries to become an excuse to stop trying.
Getting Stronger Starts With One Step
If you’re reading this and thinking, “I’m too old,” “I’m too out of shape,” or “I’ve had too many injuries,” I want you to remember something:
You don’t have to start big.
Start small.
Take one step.
Do a little bit.
Then do a little more.
The goal is simply to get a little better each time.
Your starting point doesn’t determine where you can finish.
And if Sue can continue working toward becoming stronger at 75 years old, I believe there’s a good chance that you can take that first step too.
